Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for food, eating and weight-related issues (MBCT-Eat): an 8 Week Mindful Eating Programme

Diets, weight obsession and food rules create a dysfunctional relationship with food.

This 8 week course is based on Mindfulness Based Eating Awareness Training and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. The focus of this Mindful Eating Programme is to teach skills and tools that allow you to shift your relationship with food.

The programme consists of 8 weekly 2 hour-long sessions, as well as a morning of mindfulness practice and a follow-up session approximately 2 months after the end of the course. It is designed for anyone who struggles with compulsive and emotional eating.  It also addresses anxiety and food, body and weight related issues.  The course uses a non- diet approach and mindfulness of food and eating as the foundation.

Mindfulness and meditation can facilitate the exploration of our relationship to eating, food and our bodies. The group processes include meditation, breathing, mindful movement, eating awareness tools and group discussion. No prior meditation experience is necessary. There is weekly homework which is an important aspect of the course.

Topics covered include:

  • Managing difficult emotions, anxiety and food cravings.
  • Distinguishing hunger signals, learning to stop when you have eaten enough.
  • Practical tools on how to deal with binge eating and mindless eating.

This programme will benefit people who:

  • Have a history of yo-yo dieting and want to get out of the dieting cycle
  • Have rigid rules around eating
  • Binge eat or suffer from bulimia
  • Eat when stressed, bored, anxious or experience difficult emotions

Dr Richard-John (RJ) Chippindall is a clinical psychologist in private practice with 20 years of experience in mindfulness. He has worked closely in the clinical context with patients for whom the management of stress and other mental health conditions is vital to functional living. In addition, he has had extensive experience both locally and in the UK running MBCT groups and other mindfulness-based interventions for individuals with emotional and psychological difficulties, problems with eating and body image, as well as chronic physical health conditions. He studied internationally and has had significant experience, both personally as well as professionally, in the importance of meditation and mindfulness practice. In addition to his work with clinical populations, he has provided training for mental health professionals on the various psychotherapeutic models of treatment incorporating mindfulness practice.

Xenia Ayiotis is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counsellor and Mindful Eating Coach. She is in private practice and facilitates workshops on how to achieve a balanced, respectful, healthy and joyful relationship with food and eating using Mindfulness Based Intuitive Eating. Xenia helps people break free of the diet cycle, recover from binge eating and overeating to feel comfortable in their bodies and eat intuitively so that they can find peace with food and create a healthy and happy relationship with food, eating and their bodies.
